Problems With Your New Pet

SO…..I GOT A RABBIT NOW WHAT DO I DO?

It isn’t friendly

“Alison, thanks again for helping us get a bunny finally, we really appreciate all you did. I was wondering if you could give us some pointers on how to get a bunny to be friendlier? I figured since we were getting such a young bunny, that it would be highly active however it seems very difficult to play with. It jumps away from us everytime we try to pick it up and take it out of the cage and even when we try and put it back in the cage, so I’m not sure if this is normal or if we need to do something to get our bunny to be more responsive to us.

Thanks again!
Jeff”
Answer:
The rabbit just isn’t quite used to you yet, here’s what you should try. Let your rabbit alone for two days, no touching and don’t talk to it when you feed it (this will make it realize that it values your companionship). Now, take it out and put it in the room, grab a book, movie, magazine, etc.. and sit in the room, ignoring the rabbit. Eventually the bunny will come to you, then you can play with it. Let him stay out for at the most 3 hours, then try this exercise again the next day, etc… after a while he should warm up. You can also try to make these times more fun by offering treats or toys that he otherwise wouldn’t get.

My rabbit isn’t eating

“Hey Ali! We were just wondering why the little bunny you gave us doesn’t seem to want to

eat…what are we doing wrong?”

Answer:

There may be several reasons why your rabbit is not eating.

1) You’re giving him the wrong food. Make sure you are using the same food as the person

you bought your rabbit from. Rabbits aren’t fond of switching foods and it will take a while

2) The rabbit is nervous..give him a day or two to get use to it. During this time, only visit

him to give him more food or water

3) The rabbit is sick. If the rabbit does not eat anything for three days you need to contact a

vet or a rabbit owner you trust

“Our rabbit was playing in his run, when he jumped out and started playing with our dog.

They seem to like eachother…is this O.K.?”

Answer:

Sounds fine, if the rabbit makes the first step and your pet does not act aggresivly, they will

probably get along just fine. Don’t leave them alone together though, until you are positive.”
